According to the authors of the Macmillan English Dictionary, the English language is considered to be one of the richest in the world in terms of vocabulary. Together with technical words, it possesses more than a million lexical units. Yet, if I had to choose my favorite word, I would choose a very simple one, the one that every person knows and uses, but which still has a deep meaning: I would choose the word “mother”.
When I was fourteen, my family moved house. Although the new home was much bigger, more convenient and my own room was twice the size of the old one, I was extremely unhappy. All my friends appeared to be miles away from me and the atmosphere in my new school seemed quite hostile. Studying well was not a good way to become popular among your class mates, but it guaranteed the nickname of a brown-nose one hundred percent. For me, it was like my worst nightmare coming true. I felt lonely, I could not make any friends, and gradually I decided to stop studying so well in order just to make a couple of friends, with whom I could share at least some of my emotions.
The history of the mankind is definitely the history of development and inventions. Wheel, printing press, penicillin, the first car and the first plane, Internet created the modern world and shaped it in the way we know it. But are all these inventions good? To my mind, there are certain inventions the world would be better off without. One of them is the nuclear energy.
Whether we consider research, art or study, we will see that in any type of intellectual human activities there are two possible impulses: a voluntary desire to reach the result, which is generally independent of any influence, and an order, which can be either paid for or simply imposed upon an individual involved in the activity. The latter type is often thought to be more important, as it provides not only the opportunity for the activity to be organized, but also for the intellectuals to earn their living. Personally I disagree with this opinion and believe that voluntary and independent research, study or any other creative activity are much more important and efficient.
Socrates once said that the more one tries to understand life, the more confused and lost one feels. This idea is definitely true for me. Although I love my life and thank God every day for this precious gift, there are a lot of things which I find strange, puzzling or irritating. But what I find the most confusing is the phenomenon of people who ask you questions the answer to which is either obvious or so personal that you simply could not reply honestly. Whenever I am asked such a question, I get extremely embarrassed and lose my ability to speak completely.
7 p.m. Loud cries, doors banging, feet hammering quickly downstairs. A typical scene: my fourteen-year-old next door neighbor is having a row with her father. This happens every day and the reason is not that the father and the daughter do not get along well – they deeply love each other. The reason is very simple: the girl is now going out with her first boyfriend and her father is sure that she is too young to date. But what is the age when dating is appropriate?

November 11 is celebrated as Veterans’ Day in honor of the men and women who laid their lives in war to uphold freedom for their nation. Veteran’s Day was initially called Armistice Day, which marked the end of World War I on November 11, 1918. The war ended on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month of the year. It was in 1954 that President Eisenhower called it Veterans’ Day.
Two years ago I suddenly found myself in the middle of an existential crisis. I was in a strange city, with no family, no money and a vague perspective of employment. Two of my close relatives had died, I had split up with the person I loved, lost my job and been diagnosed with a breast tumor. The only thing I could do was to constantly ask myself questions about why it was happening to me. I felt miserable and things were going from bad to worse until one day a miracle happened.
Imagine: all the teachers gather in the staff room to be graded for their work. The representatives of students comment upon their work and name the teacher of the week. The criteria for evaluation are the ability to get students involved in the educational process, original presentation of the material, respectful and tolerant attitude. Difficult to imagine? Sounds like a shocking idea? Undoubtedly, yes, but what would be the result if this system was really implemented?
