Society & Family - Part 14
Several days ago, surfing the Net, I came across a news item which told a story of a seventeen-year-old guy who had attempted a burglary. When he was asked why he had done it, the youngster answered that he simply had nothing to do and decided to see if he would manage to open the lock of his neighbor’s front door. So, the reason for his crime was a mere boredom. I was so shocked with the news, that could not but think about it. Can boredom lead to trouble? Unfortunately, we must admit that it is true.
Single-sex schools are not very common nowadays, but there was a time when it was the general trend in education that boys and girls studied separately. Historic novels are rich in heroines who complete their education in girls’ boarding schools and become real ladies. But does attending a single-sex school have any advantages? Many teachers claim this approach is useful, as it is easier to control the discipline. But in my opinion, this may be the only advantage, yet going to a single-sex school can cause a number of problems.
Consider the last youth comedy film you watched. Was there a character who was supposed to be a close friend of the heroine, but in reality meticulously planned to make her split up with her boyfriend, whom she was secretly in love with, or some stupid blond school beauty queen who terrorized her friends, making them feel ugly and uninteresting? I am more than sure that there was. And this, to my mind, reflects one of the most offensive gender prejudices in our society, a belief that girls are always mean to each other.
The number of people who avail of international migration has slowed down a little bit recently, but still the number of people who are moving from the developing countries to the rich ones is growing all the time.
Usually, when the question is about who is a better sportsman – a white or black one – people tend to prefer the latter one. Why so? To talk about the racial differences (physical and cultural) it is important to say that in the past it was all about the discrimination excuses. Nowadays, the dominancy of black sportsmen is no wonder anymore, but still this aspect makes people think what the reason of black dominancy is. Nevertheless, the majority of scientists in the United States of America are not really concerned with the study of the white & black people’s physical differences.
From the very beginning of our world’s existence there have always been class distinctions. Some people were rich and others were trying to make both ends meet. There has also existed one significant question – should wealthy nations share their reserves with the countries that are poorer? Is it important to provide them with food and other things required for life? Or is it the responsibility of the poor country government to take care of its citizens?
Today all we hear about is growing quantity of abortions, kids getting pregnant, all kinds of sexual transmitted diseases being spread. Sexuality-connected problems are on the rise. What we need to think about is the cause and possible ways of changing the situation. Most people think that if there was more information on sexual relations, the number of these cases could probably be reduced to minimum.
In Great Britain, when some people are getting older, they usually go to the homes for elderly people, where nurses are taking care of them. Sometimes such service is paid by the government, but still there’s a question if the city should pay for it, or is it up to us to take care of our grandparents?
Every day we receive tons of information from different sources. The ones we trust most come from mass media of course. Reading morning paper while eating breakfast or watching TV during the dinner is a common thing.
Children have always been copying their parents’ behavior. It is very easy to notice. Three-year-old girl criticizes her doll for the same faults she was punished earlier. She copies not only her mother’s words, but even mimics and gestures. Parents’ behavior is taken for the model: “I want to do exactly what my mother does”.
