Society & Family - Part 17
All of us are born in a family, which lives in a certain country at a specific point of time. Our outlook and perspective in life are largely shaped by the environment, in which we live. The inputs we have in our life would determine what kind of people we grow up to become. What goes into our minds can greatly influence what comes out of it later. No matter where a person is born and raised up, a wide exposure to other cultures and lands would have a profound influence on having the right perspective of the world around us.
It is human nature to preserve oneself in the first place. Still, we have some good traits that make us reach out to help those in need. We do this as individuals, as communities and even as nations. The outcome of giving international aid to poor countries has both advantages and disadvantages. We will briefly consider the disadvantages and the advantages below.
How would you like the idea of being locked in the cage and having thousands of people looking at you every day for their pleasure? Nobody would like things like that. But that’s an ordinary treatment animals get in the zoos. To my point of view, it is strictly important to forbid such places like zoos, as they are unsuitable to maintain the health and habits of poor animals.
When I was young, I remember a lot of boys, dreaming about becoming policemen to protect people from evil and violence and to be guardians of peace and order. The job police do is worth respect, which goes without saying. But nowadays the image of a strong policeman facing danger and protecting the life of simple citizens is darkened by a great amount of scandals with drugs and power abuse police have been involved in. There are a lot of stories that pop up here and there, where guys in blue uniform appear not as protectors, but as criminals. There are a lot of facts confirming that the behavior of the police very often is inexcusable: they can harass or beat people, take bribes and humiliate citizens for no reason. So instead of respect, people feel fear and disgust to the police in general, which does not do good to the patriotism or national pride for the state we are living in.
When the question is about immigration, usually it is related to movement of people from one country to the other one. To talk about the Unites States of America, the notion of immigration is highly-debated in different areas, especially in the political one.
As people become more aware of the environmental problems, they try to reconsider their way of living and make their households both environmentally-friendly and more economical. They start to equip their houses with new technological gadgets that take advantage of natural energy, such as, for instance, solar power. One of the most successful representatives of ‘green’ technology is a flat plate solar collector.
Nowadays we are bombarded with news concerning lawsuits that companies and individuals initiated because of the violation of the copyright laws. The Internet appears to be applying more rigorous copyright policy as well, since a multitude of sharing sites have recently been heavily fined or have ceased to exist. However, some people still keep wondering why this policy is vitally important.
At present we often find ourselves in flight or fight situations where our lives are under threat. No wonder, there are people who support the idea of owning a gun as a means to protect themselves and their possessions. But does gun ownership really make the world a safer place to live in?
The more elaborate and violent video games are getting, the more often can you hear an opinion that playing them is detrimental to the teenagers’ mental health and makes them more aggressive in real life. In fact, this suggestion is far-fetched and does not hold water, as there is no evidence to support it.
Materialism refers to a collection of personality traits. The contemporary world is full of people who possess materialistic trait. They have a belief that owning and acquisition of the right properties is the vital ingredients of happiness. These people think that success is judged by the things individual possesses. Philosophers and theologians have been complaining for long that materialism is contrary to moral life. More often the goal of gaining material wealth is regarded as empty and in result it prevents a person from being involved in a normal life. The consequences of pursuing materialistic lifestyle are the inability to reach the state of happiness in one’s life. The empirical studies, carried out to find the correlation between happiness and materialism, have confirmed negative correlation between the two.
