Society & Family - Part 8
Imagine: all the teachers gather in the staff room to be graded for their work. The representatives of students comment upon their work and name the teacher of the week. The criteria for evaluation are the ability to get students involved in the educational process, original presentation of the material, respectful and tolerant attitude. Difficult to imagine? Sounds like a shocking idea? Undoubtedly, yes, but what would be the result if this system was really implemented?
The issue of health care is one of the most important aspects of an election campaign of any political party, which certainly reflects the extent to what the society depends on a good healthcare service. A well-organized, efficient health care system is not that easy to provide and one of the key problems on the way to the ideal hospitals and medical help is proper funding. Nowadays, there are three basic types of funding: private, insurance and state. Nevertheless, many people believe that the government must bear full responsibility for providing the money our health care service needs. However, I do not completely agree with the idea.
When I was little, I loved listening to my granny telling me stories about her youth. It seemed so strange to imagine her going out with some boy. And I clearly remember that I often felt confused. She sometimes told me about a boy whom she liked, but he was too shy to ask her out, and she could not do it either because it had to be a male decision. “Why?” – I kept asking her. She could not explain properly and I could not get the idea. And even now I still do not understand this very common belief that it is unacceptable for a girl to ask a boy out.
The death penalty is a very complicated subject to deal with. Most people would not want to talk about it out in the open. It is not a light subject to deal with in the first place. It is definitely not what one can talk over the dinner table. Since the lives of people are at stake, the matter is very serious and people understand it. That is probably why they hesitate to even talk about it freely.
When compared to other forms of governments, monarchies and dictatorships, democracy is the best form of government by far. Most of the nations have chosen the way of liberty and equality of people; their progress has always been a direct outcome of it. One of the things that makes democracy so effective is that people can decide whom they would be governed by.
People are born with different talents and it usually takes time and care to discover the one hidden within each child. For many kids, their talent comes out in a natural way as the child grows up. Some gifts are more visible than others and are easily recognizable. For instance, a child with a good voice and ability to sing could easily be noticed. But another one might have the ability to solve complicated math puzzles and this may not be readily evident until and unless the child comes across an opportunity to express this talent.
Mary, a real estate agent, unlocks the door of the flat and lets me in. I give the flat a quick glance. Everything looks fine. “Do you like it?” Mary seems a bit impatient. It is our third flat and she has the right to behave so. “Yeah, I think so”. But I have not seen the window sill yet. Strange? Silly? I agree. But what can I do if the window sill for me is the place where the world starts and disappears?
When I was a child. I was often ill and had very few chances of playing outdoors. That was when the window sill of my bedroom became a place for me to keep in touch with the rest of the world. We lived in the city center and there was always something going on in the street: the cars parked very close to each other, dogs, which seemed to take their owners for long walks rather than vice versa, stray cats trying to catch fat pigeons, my next door neighbors arguing passionately provided a wonderful entertainment for a bored child.
I could never understand the fascination which many people express when they talk about traveling in time. The desire of going into future seemed strange: what for, if I will get there in any case? The idea of going back was rather boring, as I have never been keen on history and the perspective of getting into the medieval period with horrible diseases, wars, uncomfortable clothes and obscure etiquette rules was the last thing I would dream of. However, when I was fifteen, I first felt that going back in time could be a possibility to long for. If I could do it, I would choose a day which is neither historic, nor generally important. It would be July 16, a sunny hot day which changed my life forever.
Switch on the TV and you are sure to find a negative news item about public schools: violence, teenage crime and a low level of knowledge are often mentioned among the problems related to many public schools, especially in depressed areas of big cities. Terrified with the perspective of their child growing up in this kind of surrounding, many people seek for an alternative from of education. Homeschooling seems one of the options, but what are its advantages and disadvantages if compared to public schools?
When I was little, I often had nightmares about monsters. I used to wake up at night and call my dad who was supposed to frighten them away. Once I asked him if he had ever had bad dreams, my father answered that he often had a nightmare about losing his job. I was puzzled: what was his job compared to my monsters? Only many years later I realized what he meant.
Unemployment has always been an important social problem. However, in the last decades it has gained even larger significance. The reasons for that are both demographic and economic. On the one hand, we are a society of an extensive type, which means that the mortality rate is higher than the birth rate and our nation is actually aging. As a result, each year there are more retired people and fewer middle-aged ones who mainly pay taxes and ensure the state budget can guarantee all the social payments.
