Society & Family - Part 6

Idea of Lottery

Some people like to make a quick buck without toiling much. But the majority work hard to earn a living. Both of them cannot understand the other point of view. Those who don’t like to work cannot understand how the other group can toil all day long just to earn some money when there are other methods like lottery and gambling to make money quickly. Oh the other hand, those who believe in hard work cannot understand how people can hope to survive without working hard.

Can Good Leaders Become Great Politicians?

A leader is any person who is appointed to be in charge of a body or a group of people and to take care of all their interests in an impartial way. He has to be strong mentally and able to guide his followers to success based on facts and considering the risks involved in making a move towards a specific set of goals. A politician, on the other hand, is a person who leads a group of people with common interests and holds or aspires to hold a position in a government. He has to be elected by the masses and has the obligation to represent their interests in the office that he holds and lead his or her subjects towards a bright future based on their interests. He must have great leadership skills in order to be considered successful.

Psychopaths

Psychopaths are identified as people who are emotionally deficient in psychological terms. They lack empathy based upon emotions with their victims and are an important source of moral motivation. Although they have linguistic abilities, they lack complete understanding, which is a capacity to appreciate moral rules responding to their choice of actions. These people are not serialized criminals, as their offenses are usually not significant and are rather considered to be social than legal. A psychopath is one who can get away with illegal or socially objectionable behavior in his own interest.

Holocaust: What Can Be Worse?

The Holocaust is a dark page in the history of Europeans. It was genocide of more than six million European Jews during World War II performed by the Nazi Germany. These six million people who were exterminated made two-thirds of the Jews population who had lived in Europe before the Holocaust.

Frankly speaking, for me the question of how the Holocaust happened and why still remains incomprehensible. I’m definitely sure that it is one of the most horrifying and shocking deeds of the humankind. Its victims were tortured in devious ways that eventually led to death. Among those methods there were: internal irrigation, sun lamp, hot bath, freezing, etc. And I think that the generation that lives today should preserve the memory of those events and promote the idea that the Holocaust must never happen again.

Is Our Taxation System Fair?

Every government collects taxes from its citizens in order to be able to fulfill its responsibility of providing proper roads, water, sanitation facilities, health care and education to the public. The government would need billions of dollars to carry out all its duties and it is due to the tax payers’ money that all this work is done. So, citizens are expected and mandated by law to pay the appropriate taxes. They have to pay taxes to their local state or county governments as well as to the federal government in certain instances.

Can Curfews Keep Teens Out of Trouble?

Teens today are under tremendous pressure from all sides. On one side, there is pressure at school to perform well in their academics. As they go higher up the classes, subjects become more difficult and they need to spend more and more time studying to get good grades. On the other side, they have peer pressure that forces them to become accepted in their group of friends. Here again, the pressures can either be positive or negative depending on the type of group that they choose to hang out with. Some groups are performance-oriented and only those who study well are allowed to enter them. Others are fun loving and require those in the group to have a good time, all the time.

My Favorite Word

According to the authors of the Macmillan English Dictionary, the English language is considered to be one of the richest in the world in terms of vocabulary. Together with technical words, it possesses more than a million lexical units. Yet, if I had to choose my favorite word, I would choose a very simple one, the one that every person knows and uses, but which still has a deep meaning: I would choose the word “mother”.

Always Be Yourself!

When I was fourteen, my family moved house. Although the new home was much bigger, more convenient and my own room was twice the size of the old one, I was extremely unhappy. All my friends appeared to be miles away from me and the atmosphere in my new school seemed quite hostile. Studying well was not a good way to become popular among your class mates, but it guaranteed the nickname of a brown-nose one hundred percent. For me, it was like my worst nightmare coming true. I felt lonely, I could not make any friends, and gradually I decided to stop studying so well in order just to make a couple of friends, with whom I could share at least some of my emotions.

Roots of Democracy

Whether we consider research, art or study, we will see that in any type of intellectual human activities there are two possible impulses: a voluntary desire to reach the result, which is generally independent of any influence, and an order, which can be either paid for or simply imposed upon an individual involved in the activity. The latter type is often thought to be more important, as it provides not only the opportunity for the activity to be organized, but also for the intellectuals to earn their living. Personally I disagree with this opinion and believe that voluntary and independent research, study or any other creative activity are much more important and efficient.

Questions That Are Hard to Answer

Socrates once said that the more one tries to understand life, the more confused and lost one feels. This idea is definitely true for me. Although I love my life and thank God every day for this precious gift, there are a lot of things which I find strange, puzzling or irritating. But what I find the most confusing is the phenomenon of people who ask you questions the answer to which is either obvious or so personal that you simply could not reply honestly. Whenever I am asked such a question, I get extremely embarrassed and lose my ability to speak completely.
